Maria Island is a gorgeous little island and national park off the coast of Tasmania. The peaceful park is home to a variety of wildlife, heritage and beautiful scenery.

It was originally a penal colony, and the ruins of the penitentiary buildings still stand today. The island offers many beautiful walking and cycling tracks that take you through the landscape, offering unique and breathtaking views.

Inhabitants of the island include wombats, wallabies, birdlife and the rare Tasmanian devil, all which roam freely. It is a great opportunity to see some of Australia’s iconic wildlife up close in the wild.

Maria Island is accessible from a ferry from the main island, and if you want to stay overnight, accommodation is available, or you can set up a tent at a free camping site on the island.
