Six Top Pubs

Alison Huth reveals her favourites from their recent travels

Hotel Royal, Gurley NSW

Hotel Gurley – You may well ask ‘where is Gurley’? Well, if you half blink, you will completely miss it. But the pub is friendly as are the people we met there. Small, old, seen better days, but a great pub for a drink or two and a meal if the kitchen is open.

Royal Hotel, Leyburn QLD

The Royal Hotel is magic. We do know the new owners, which gave us a great chance at a catch up, but the pub is really jumping on a Friday night with the good old meat tray raffles. The food is delicious, atmosphere galore, it’s a wonderful country pub. Huge area out the back for groups too.

Gravesend Hotel, NSW

Gravesend is not big, it’s another one of those ‘why are you here’ places. But it does have a lovely pub with excellent food and really friendly hosts. Just the sort of place we need to keep visiting to make sure that it keeps operating.

Blue Heeler Hotel, QLD

What can I say about this one! Character galore, excellent food, lovely people behind the bar, and the best floor show in the world thanks to the Brolgas. I was really surprised about the huge bar area out the back, just perfect for a group or special event.

Betoota Hotel, QLD

It’s in the middle of nowhere. When they have food you can get a meal, if they have run out of anything, you have to make do until the next delivery arrives. That’s how it is in the middle of nowhere. But, we had a ball there. It was a big bucket-list item ticked off.

Royal Hotel, Meandarra QLD

Oh boy. Did we have a big night there. We just went there for dinner but ended up having the time of our lives. The locals are so friendly, we felt like we were at our own local. The food was good too!
