Take the family on a technicolour journey through time  this summer at the Maritime Museum — photos Morgan Sette

This summer, the Australian National Maritime Museum is home to Patch Theatre’s immersive installation,  Superluminal, which combines bold visual design, collaborative storytelling, and interactive play to create an  enchanting and unmissable experience for young audiences. 

Opening January 4 and designed for children ages 4-9 and their families, Superluminal ignites their curiosity  through a theatrical installation full of Patch’s renowned interactive light play and takes them on a journey of  discovery which navigates nature’s extraordinary creatures, systems and beauty, and how time shapes them. 

Join the Mythical Creatures on stage

Upon entry to Superluminal, you use colour-changing lanterns as you are guided on a journey of light creating mythical creatures and bringing them to life with sound and spectacular lighting as you capture their  fantastical shadows on a magical glowing wall. 

Geoff Cobham, Artistic Director of Patch Theatre, has said, ‘Installations are a fantastic way for young children  to engage with art and to follow their own impulses within a creative space. We love making theatre for 4–8- year-olds but what they really want is to play – to be on stage with us and be part of the action – and  Superluminal allows them to do this.’ 

‘Be like Scientists’

Annalice Creighton, Programs and Activations Coordinator at the Museum has said, ‘The Museum is thrilled to  be bringing the wonder and excitement of Patch Theatre’s Superluminal to young audiences this summer. Inspired by museum collections, Superluminal invites young learners to be like scientists, investigators of  terrestrial, aquatic and imagined future-fantastic animals. It is a beautiful and playful storytelling experience  that will enchant and delight visitors of all ages.’ 

40 minute sessions till February 2

Running from January 4 – February 2, Superluminal runs in 40-minute sessions between 10am-3:40pm on  Wednesday – Sunday, and tickets to Superluminal also include entry to the Museum’s Kids on Deck activity  space, the core galleries and free Museum activities. 

There will also be two relaxed sessions of Superluminal as part of the Museum’s Sensory-Friendly Days, on  January 19 and February 2, which are designed for those with sensory sensitivities or with a disability.
