Exploring Some Australian History at Fort Queenscliff

Discover more about Australia’s early military history at one of the most iconic landmarks in the Geelong region, Fort Queenscliff. First established around the 1860s, Fort Queenscliff was set up to protect the gold-rich colony. Over time it became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads and was manned as a coastal defence installation continuously from 1883 to 1946.

Take the opportunity to learn more about the history on a guided tour with over 150 years of Australia’s heritage on display. Hear stories about an artillery soldiers life between 1860 and 1946, as well as the activities of the Department of Defence to the present day. You can visit the ammunition magazines buried under the cliffs of Shortland’s Bluff, and gun emplacements which reveal the gun crew’s amazing views of the RIP to protect Port Phillip from attack by enemy ships. For the kids, and kids at heart, there is an opportunity for dress ups as well, and of course, photos are welcome.
