The Great Winter Heater Debate

All caravan heaters are not made equal and to make sure you choose the right appliance for your van and set-up there are a few key factors to consider when doing your research.

There is no hard and fast ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ it all comes down to the way you plan to use your appliances.

Let’s take a look at the differences:

DIESEL HEATERS:

Pros

  • Fuel source – Diesel is more readily accessible in isolated parts of Australia
  • Installation – Unlike gas, you do not need a licence to install a diesel heater
  • Performance – Suited to larger vehicles

Cons

  • Fuel Tank- Most caravan setups will require the installation of a diesel fuel tank
  • Fuel Source – When unused for long periods or in super cold weather diesel may deteriorate or suffer from ‘waxing’
  • Costs – can be more expensive to buy than a gas heater
  • Noise – Generally noisier than a gas heater
  • Service – Need to service
  • Smell – You can smell the diesel fumes

GAS HEATERS:

Pros

  • Fuel Source – Gas is readily available in most places in Australia also most caravans already have gas appliances so adding a gas heater is relatively straightforward
  • Cost – Gas heaters are generally a lower cost than a diesel heater – when you factor in running and maintenance costs.
  • Noise – They are a very quiet form of heating
  • Efficiency – Uses less power than a diesel heater
  • Service – Servicing is not required
  • Space – Gas heaters are generally very compact and lightweight
