August Moon Caravan Park

These August Moon sea-changers are doing it again! This time, hitting the road for a gap year.

After welcoming nomads for nine years, G’day August Moon Caravan Park owners Cameron and Julie McKay will again follow the sun. “Julie often jokes she is on the wrong side of the counter.

She has a huge bucket list and it keeps getting bigger as guests share their journeys,” says Cameron. Their kids, Hamish, Maddison, Tiarna and Darcy were aged from 3 to 9 on their 2012 lap. In 2016, they convoyed from Cairns to Nagambie as Ambassadors for Dometic on their Follow the Sun tour, raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. “Life is precious and we want to start making more memories with our children.”

Where to Next?

“The kids are older now, so there will be different experiences in the places we looked at last time.” Cameron is chuffed his eldest daughter will join them: “We’re lucky Tiarna [finishing year 12] still wants to travel with mum, dad and her younger sister and brother.”

Sadly, Darcy lost his life in a car accident 22 months ago. “When you lose a sibling, family time matters–and for us, too, you’ve only got your kids for a short time.” Anywhere is on the cards but honouring their son in Cape York tops the list: “Darcy was so looking forward to a 4WDing adventure after year 12.” Bungle Bungles, Horizontal Falls and a return to Exmouth also rank highly. “Honestly, it won’t matter where we go, as long as we are all together as a family that is all that matters.”

Caravan Park Life

Meeting people, sharing stories, forming friendships and promoting your region is truly rewarding, says Cameron.

“Our kids have experienced more [locally] than many of their friends who’ve lived in the area all their lives.” Working as a team also brought them closer, with the kids proudly helping during ‘Happy Hour’, in the office or on the grounds.

“Our kids learned important life skills. They are comfortable and confident and can talk to anyone of any age.”

The McKays know their 9-acre park is a winner, but it’s time to sell. Three acres remain undeveloped.

Adjacent to natural beauty and thriving industries, it’s patronised year-round, with cabins and large caravan sites set amongst magnificent rain trees.

August Moon’s beautiful pool is also iconic.

Follow the Sun

As park owners and travellers, the Mckays shone in their Dometic Follow the Sun 3-month roles, hosting happy hours at caravan parks.

“This was an awesome experience, doing something we love–travelling–whilst raising money for a worthy cause. Our kids stepped out of their comfort zone to help others in need, which we are very proud of.”

August Moon paid it forward to the Everything Caravan & Camping ambassadors on their Trip of a Lifetime.

The Mckays enjoyed hosting the What’s Up Downunder crew and were thrilled to have Tania Kernaghan, Gina Jeffries and Rod McCormack perform in their camp kitchen!

A Kind Community

Fleeting connections can run deep. The McKays were treated with empathy in their time of need.

When the Mckays lost their son Darcy, guests who they’d never met before offered to help run the park with no expectation of reward, their compassion and kindheartedness will always be remembered. Others offered a hug or a compassionate ear, many shared similar heartbreak.

“All these beautiful acts of kindness helped keep us going, even though we felt like our world had shattered.” Caravan Park life is rewarding, says Cameron: “We hope the next proprietors enjoy the lifestyle as much as us.”
