Need to rejig your plans? Check out the accessible snowys!
Times are certainly changing with many of us reinventing how we travel in the current climate.
Thankfully, those of us usually embarking on our 3 to 6 month trips up north are finding closer destinations off the main roads and into the country!
A trip to the north-east part of Victoria on the border with NSW is a must when seeking out the country life with the pristine locations of Corryong in Victoria and Khancoban at the base of NSW Snowy Mountains.
These beautiful out-of-the-way locations provide a quiet and relaxing break.
This region is famous for the Man from Snowy River Festival in Corryong, offering a classic reenactment of the poem, a stunning horse program, bush poetry and music, a rodeo and much more. Plan your stay next year, April 7-10, 2022.
Active in Khancoban
This region provides stunning country views, tranquil rivers and streams as well as many historical sites, not to mention the beautiful Snowy Mountains. Just 35km down the road from Corryong is the lovely little town of Khancoban. Camp out on the Lake (top left, opposite page) and enjoy a great view as you light a fire for the evening. Khancoban is a superb base to enjoy bushwalking, mountain biking, waterskiing, fishing, kayaking or simply relax and take in the view. Neighbouring country towns also provide a rich history and wonderful high country food and wine to complement the experience.
Khancoban is also home to the well-known Snowy Hydro Station, featuring tours (top right, opposite page). Explore deeper into the Snowys and take a day road trip up the Alpine Highway all the way to Jindabyne. A beautiful drive on blacktop, with many amazing photographic opportunities. In summer you can even board a cable car and watch the mountain bikers make their way down the slopes, or take a walk along tracks to explore the peaks of the Snowy.
The summer months are a superb time to explore the beautiful mountains and all they have to offer!
