Big Red Bash smash ‘Nutbush’ World Record in most Aussie tribute to Tina Turner
Simply the best tribute for the late rock n roll queen, Tina Turner, as 5,838 revellers boot-scooted their way to a world record for the largest Nutbush City Limits Dance – adjudicated by the Australian Book of Records.
The Nutbush dance was a highlight of the final day of the sold-out three-day 10th anniversary Birdsville Big Red Bash event – with an impressive 5,838 sequenced steppers lined up beating the previous punchy record of 4,084 set at the 2022 Big Red Bash.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the 1973 soul classic, the spectacular dance off took place below the Simpson Desert’s legendary 40-metre-high Big Red sand dune – the largest of its kind in the world.
Dancers stepped it up in the costume department with thousands rocking up in their best Tina attire, while others opted for more eclectic outfits – from Hawaiian shirts to hippos in tutus.
A dance with a worthy cause at its core, the Nutbush has been raising much-needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctors since 2016, with this year’s bush dancers raising an impressive $87,570 for their amazing work.
“Simply the best tribute to the legendary Tina Turner! We are thrilled to have witnessed 5,838 enthusiastic revellers come together to set a world record for the largest Nutbush City Limits Dance. The energy and spirit displayed by the participants were truly remarkable,” said Greg Donovan, Festival owner and Managing Director of the Outback Music Festival Group.
“It’s heartwarming to see the Nutbush dance become an iconic tradition at the Birdsville Big Red Bash, raising much-needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctors. Tina Turner’s legacy lives on through the joyous celebration and the incredible support it provides to a worthy cause,” Donovan added.
I’m sure she would have been proud that the Nutbush raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Royal Flying Doctors, and that this legacy will live on,” said Steve Donovan, Operations Manager for the Outback Music Festival Group who stage the Birdsville Big Red Bash and Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash.
