Beer O’Clock – Favourite places to crack a beer in the bush

Love a cold beverage? Borgy shares his top 5 all-time favourite places to crack a beer in the bush

While a cold beverage is a welcome thought at the best of times, it’s even more rewarding when you’ve had to grit your teeth and really work in order to get it. For me, there’s just nothing quite like enjoying a beer at the end of a tough track with a ripper vista to help you really soak up the moment. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing some of the best places Australia has to offer the keen camper, but there’s five places in which a gulp of liquid gold has never tasted better, and I wasn’t even in a pub. With that in mind, here are my top five places to crack a beer and enjoy this grand country we call home.

YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE THE CURVATURE OF THE PLANET! TRUST ME, IT’S SOMETHING YOU WON’T FORGET IN A HURRY!

1. Big Red, Birdsville QLD

Nothing says “adventure” like making the trek out to the edge of the Simpson Desert! No matter where you’re from, it’s quite the journey. Now, when you finally get there one of the first things to do is lower your tire pressures and tackle the infamous “Big Red” sand dune, which is the largest sand dune in the desert. If you’re lucky enough to tackle the dune just before sunset, you can enjoy perhaps the most well-deserved beverage you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting as you gander across the vast, sunburnt dunes. Trust me, it’s something you won’t forget in a hurry!

2. Mundi Mundi Lookout, Broken Hill NSW

If you’ve never made the trip out to Broken Hill, it’s time to hitch up the camper trailer and do it! While you’re there, make sure you trek out to Silverton. It’s a quaint historic town filled with quirkiness and character, and just up the road you’ll find the majestic Mundi Mundi Lookout, which naturally, overlooks Mundi Mundi Plains. You’ll find yourself starring at a horizon so distant you can literally see the curvature of the planet! Once again, right on sunset is the time to visit this spot, as the colour of the sky is just sensational! No wonder the post-apocalyptic 1981 movie, Mad Max 2 movie was filmed here.

3. Cape York Peninsula, Cape York QLD

Perhaps the most renowned 4WD experience in Australia, a trip to Cape York is an experience of a lifetime. While the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) is a definite highlight, the real joy of the experience can be found after travelling thousands of kilometres from home to reach the most northern point of the Australian continent. It is here that you can crack a coldie, reflect on your adventure and take it all in. While you’re there, don’t forget to grab the customary “selfie” photos next to the sign at the tip, this is a memory you’ll want to last forever!

4. Tassie’s West Coast

For those of us living on the eastern side of Australia, we unfortunately miss out on witnessing the sun set over the ocean. That is, unless you find yourself on the west coast of Tasmania! Yep, there’s plenty of challenging 4WDing opportunities in these parts, which makes the magic of an ocean sunset just that much better! For a campsite proven to have heavenly sunset qualities, make your way to Trial Harbour for the night, I guarantee that you won’t regret it!

5. Victorian High Country

When it comes to epic scenic vista’s, you just can’t go past the absolutely stunning Victorian High Country. It’s home to some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet, and with super steep 4WD tracks everywhere you look, it’s proven to be an offroaders paradise. Naturally, this region offers plenty of places to pull up and enjoy the view, but if you ask me, tackling the Blue Rag Range track is among the crème of the crop. Naturally, a celebratory beverage or two at the top is a welcome gesture!
