Cool Ways to be WARM!
Helen posted: Our mods in the new Tanami. First thing I do is get a template for the boat carpet to go on the floor. Very finicky, but so worth it. A floor insulation layer and hard wearing. Next is the 8mm thermal insulation in all overhead cupboards and wardrobes fixed with dots of removable double-sided tape. Then the pool noodles on the shower hose and Fusion Lock shower caddy

Deflecting the Dust
Phillip posted: Was getting a bit of dust in the hot water system vents, so made up a couple of wind/dust deflectors out of lightweight chequer plate. These have been attached to the inspection plate with silicone. Works a treat!

Safe as Houses!
Spin 20 posted: Hi all… been seeing posts on other pages… about caravan break ins whilst owners are asleep… Spin020 is home base so I thought I would add a little security to the door… yes it is a chain lock… I removed 4 links from the lock. They may still break the door lock but won’t be able to go any further

Are You Reading Right?
Les posted: Hoping someone has the answers to our “issue”. Have travelled for 11 weeks and first night of an unpowered site. We have 2 x 100ah Lithium batteries and 2 x 160w solar panels. Stayed the night in Edith falls and used TV for approx 3 hours and sirocco fans all night. Compressor fridge on and a little bit of lighting. Woke to the panel saying recharge now. Did we use too much power or is there an issue with the batteries? I would have thought that the batteries would/ should have lasted more than 1 night? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Martin replied: If I’m reading the display correctly, I don’t think your batteries are flat at all. I think your display is not calibrated to the batteries.

There were a lot more hacks but these ones stood out! Alison
Something Borrowed
Paul posted: I ‘borrowed’ this idea from someone else but thought I’d share it as I find it really useful.
It’s made up of
– an in-line filter
– a water meter (so can monitor water usage)
– a splitter with ability to control flow to each tank (this splits the pressure across the two tanks as these tank fillers typically spit water back out if there is a bit of water pressure, can turn off one line when that tank is full, and turn off both so the hose isn’t running while you make your way back to the tap)
Overall saves time and water. (Obviously this only applies if you have dual tanks with individual fill points as per our Fraser)

Waxing Lyrical
Myles posted: Hey Gang, brand new Dometic Awning that leaks from the stitching seams at both ends of the awning. Contacted Dometic who said to apply a Wax Seal to the stitching.
Has anyone done this before or had a similar issue with a new awning by Dometic?
Thank you
John replied: Yes you can use a silicone seam sealer from BCF or TentWorld. Also, and equally important always have a slope across the awning of about 50mm if rain is imminent. The water will pool behind awning roller if there is no slope.
The GIBB was closing.
Moira posted: We made a run for it and crossed at Fitzroy River crossing yesterday arvo. They were shifting the big crane for the risk of river level rising. Sitting out the light rain at Ellendale free camp. Full to capacity last night.
Too Hot to Handle
Doug posted: Hi Alison, I’ve just read that you think your Sizzler BBQ is too hot, so do we. Put some of this Magic Cooking Sheet on the barby, keeps the plate clean and also keeps it much cooler. It proved no good on our home BBQ or the Weber we used to have, but perfect for this extra hot plated one. One burner on low is still too hot. With this Magic Sheet It’s fine.

Something to be wary of if you travel with pets. Paralysis ticks are most active during the autumn months, the nymph during winter, and the adult during the spring.

Bowls, Caravans and the RFDS
The Lotus Owners Group had a great time at the Kilkivan Bowls Club (Qld) recently and enjoyed a fantastic day with morning tea and lunch and of course a good game of bowls. They also raised $965 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Well done. Thank you also to Alison Huth for the photo. Alison, (pictured far right) is also the Editor At Large for What’s Up Downunder and sends us their monthly E Magazine which is always a good read.

Soup is a warmer!
Ann posted: Winter time is leek soup time. Free-style like most of my soups. So delicious. No potatoes here but the recipes you find online include them. I just used 2x leek, 1x onion, 1x garlic glove, 500g gravy meat (you can also use mince), spices, 2x tbls vegetable stock powder, 1x sour cream, 1x cream cheese, 500 ml water.
Start with the gravy meat, cut in cubes, chop onion and garlic. Season the meat, add onion and garlic and some oil, mix. Let it sit in the fridge overnight to marinate.
Next day stir-fry the meat in the pot. Add water and chopped leek. Let it simmer for 20 min. Add sour cream, cream cheese and stock powder, simmer and stir occasionally for 10 min. Done.
You like it a bit ‘thicker? Add either potato or corn starch. Or add potato cubes to the soup together with the leek.

Beware, Wet Paint!
Luke posted: I finished this mural today (28/06/2023)
The mural is located at Windsor Public School, NSW, on the corner of Dight and Macquarie Streets. Depicting rainbow lorikeets who regularly visit the school grounds. The background is a stylized landscape of the Hawkesbury River containing the handprints of all the students, the farmland around Windsor and the Blue Mountains in the distance.
And one more just because!
