JB Dirt Roader

JB builds its vans on a thousand adventures, with customer feedback shaping design.

Take the JB Dirt Roader. The 19ft 2020 model is chock-full with innovations like the driver-side sail rail—aiding your fridge’s performance and cooling the van.

The Dirt Roader is self-contained with 160W solar and a 135Ah battery plus a 95L grey water tank for off-grid stays.

A few months back, the WUDU team took it for a quick spin. Let’s check it out.

This checker-plated semi-off roader rode true on twin-axles with AL-KO ESC on our highway adventure. With Cruisemaster CRS 3.3T suspension easily handling our muddy camp.

15in All Terrain tyres teamed nicely with the 6in chassis and 2in raiser, easily supporting the 2450kg Tare (standard).

This well-balanced combo hooked straight up to our RAM truck. But it should also couple nicely behind a mid-size 4WD—fuss-free—with the AL-KO Off-Road ball hitch.

JB designs, builds and warrants the chassis and body for up to 40km of corrugations at a time, says spokesperson Harry Partel.

With the three-year manufacturer’s warranty encompassing structurally-fitted furniture as well.

“All drawers operate on heavy duty runners so they stay on the rails in corrugations,” Harry explains.

The JB Dirt Roader is geared for outdooring. There’s the comprehensive entertainment system. Plus that driver-side sun-shade track, for quick roadside cuppas.

We love the dimmable bug-proof lighting. And the gas bayonet for barbecues at camp.

The nifty tunnel boot stores rods and other gear too grubby for indoors. There is a shade track outside over the fridge area for a shade sail if you want some extra help keeping the fridge cool.

Travelling full-time? JB Dirt Roader fits right in, offering a stylish, spacious galley-style kitchen with a clean splashback, microwave and a full-size electric oven (option) and grill.

There’s quite a bit of preparation space here, with a laminate benchtop next to the sink and a drainer on the other side. Plus, the water filter.

You’ll fit plenty in the 180L three-way fridge and find comfort in all weather—thanks to the split system air-conditioner. The 28L Suburban HWS provides ample hot water.

Other homelike comforts include the leather-upholstered two seat dinette with fold-up seat rests in view of the 24in TV.

A large lit mirror really offsets the chic grey ensuite featuring a free-standing ceramic bowl, ceramic toilet, separate shower and washing machine.

Upfront, is an innerspring queen-size bed with a padded bedhead, reading lights and robes either size. The NCE Nuovo windows here are quite large with inline flyscreens and blinds.

We loved the storage nooks conveniently positioned here, everything is just close at hand yet neatly protected by the raised lip—saving your spare specs and book mid-commute.

All up, it’s a neat unit, with JB jamming 8m hitch to spare.
