MULTICULTURAL AUSTRALIA’S LUMINOUS TO LIGHT UP AGAIN FOR 15th ICONIC YEAR WELCOMING NEW QUEENSLANDERS

Queensland’s iconic event is back for its 15th year to shine a light on belonging and light up South Bank in a stunning display of support for the state’s multicultural communities and new Queenslanders.
Hosted by Multicultural Australia, this year’s LUMINOUS Lantern Parade and World Music concert will hit the streets of South Bank and the Piazza on Friday 10 June in a joyous celebration of multiculturalism via hundreds of beautiful lanterns and performances.
Multicultural Australia CEO Christine Castley said the 15th year of LUMINOUS Lantern Parade is an exciting milestone – demonstrating the significance of this event in creating belonging and welcome in communities across Queensland.
“LUMINOUS has become an iconic symbol and public demonstration of inclusion and celebration of Queensland’s diverse communities, where we all come together to say ‘welcome’. In a year marked by global political division and conflict in many parts of the
world, it has become even more important to welcome newcomers to our shores with open
arms,” Ms Castley said.
“LUMINOUS is a significant and meaningful event, where the wider community comes together as part of Queensland Week to celebrate our country’s multiculturalism and
welcome new Queenslanders including migrants, refugees, international students and people seeking asylum.”
The LUMINOUS Lantern Parade and World Music concert is a significant part of the state’s
Queensland Day (6 June) celebrations.
LUMINOUS 2022 will feature Multicultural Australia’s trademark array of striking lanterns
including crowd favourites such as the impressive seahorse, owl, giraffe, Pegasus, Ganesh,
lion and Rainbow Serpent, Mama Africa alongside lanterns in the shape of iconic Brisbane
landmarks like the Story Bridge and City Hall.
The spectacular lantern procession will start at 6pm near the Flowstate, South Bank before
winding its way along the riverside promenade with the city backdrop and concluding at the South Bank Piazza for a vibrant World Music concert.
“Events like LUMINOUS are so important in our journey to break down barriers for new
Australians and to provide a warm welcome for all,” Ms Castley said.
“With each passing year, we are delighted to see an increase in the support from across the community including all levels of government, corporate and community services alongside schools, religious organisations and the wider community.”
The larger-than-life LUMINOUS Lantern Parade is a free public event.
The event is proudly sponsored by the Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council and
Suncorp and many more.
In conjunction with the Brisbane event, Multicultural Australia will also be bringing back the LUMINOUS in the Neighbourhood and LUMINOUS in the Regions programs across various dates and locations around the state in May and June.
