Turning Interaction into Action on Conservation
We never leave this part of Victoria without first visiting the Halls Gap Zoo. It’s one of our favourite zoos in the country. We especially love the interactive tours on offer daily at the Halls Gap Zoo.
Today’s tour was a real treat. Our first stop was at the Southern White Rhino encounter where we met a beautiful fella – just like a big puppy they said. And in a way, he was. Bred in captivity he was fairly used to humans so had no problems with the petting he got from our crew.
This species is endangered, they are being killed at a rate of 10,000 per year in the wilds of Africa and because their breading cycle is every one to two years’ they are not able to repopulate at the rate their being destroyed.
Places like Halls Gap Zoo undertake breading programs to ensure the longevity of the species.
From there it was on to the reptile enclosure where we got to meet a friendly python. It’s absolutely worth watching the video to see Robby’s reaction when she gets to have a hold of the “friendly” python.
Our last little friends we met on the way were the always popular Meerkats. It’s hilarious watching Macca interact with these gorgeous little creatures.
The work that’s undertaken at the Halls Gap Zoo is vital for the longevity of certain species of animals. They nurture and support so many species that need the intervention for their survival. They do a wonderful job and love what they do which shows in the care of the animals under their charge.
