Alice Springs Telegraph Station
The Alice Springs telegraph station is a very important historical site for the small outback town. Established in 1871, the station quite literally put Alice Springs on the map and let it grow and prosper. Having the line meant the small settlement could communicate with other cities nearby which was critical due to its remote location.
The station ceased operations around 1932 as more modern technology was established and made telegraphs unnecessary. Since then, the station has been an educational centre named the Bungalow, an army base, and an aboriginal reserve. Then it was converted to a historical reserve and reconstruction began to restore it to what it was in its heyday.
Today you can visit the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to see its history for yourself and check out the cafe and museum. For more information including making a booking, visit their site.
