You’ll Dig the Old Timers Mine
The Old Timers Mine offers a glimpse into the lives of opal miners from over 100 hundred years ago. One of the top things to do in Coober Pedy, travellers to the mine can take themselves on a self-guided tour using the map provided.
Dugout homes (living spaces dug out of the ground) are a common trend in Coober Pedy. They initially started as a simple way for the miners to make homes, making use of the holes they had dug in search of opals. The Old Timers Mine displays examples of these small living spaces which were created so miners could sleep right next to work.
Today, as technology has become more sophisticated, dugouts can be made large and comfortable, and people in Coober Pedy still live in dugouts. Places like the Oasis Tourist Park also offer accommodation in beautifully created and furnished dugouts that are just as comfortable as their above-ground counterparts.
