The Chilled-Out Guide to Jindabyne NSW
Jindabyne is well known as a top spot for sporty types. Skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting, waterskiing, wakeboarding, horse riding and mountain biking are all popular pastimes around Jindabyne. If all that activity makes your heart race for all the wrong reasons, check out our chilled-out guide for a relaxing time in Jindabyne.
Lake Jindabyne is beautiful, peaceful and pristine, the perfect place to relax. It’s also a photographer’s dream with many different “moods” according to the time of day and the weather. There are plenty of accommodation options within walking distance of the lake.
Take a walk
Follow the pathway that winds around Lake Jindabyne. Along the way are beautiful views of the lake, interesting artworks, monuments and sculptures. You’ll find out more about explorer/scientist Sir Paul Strzelecki, and the many nationalities involved in the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
Jindabyne has a great little shopping centre with a variety of goodies to browse, including snow gear and gifts, as well as eateries and a range of services. The bakery is very popular, and for good reason!
Visit the Visitor Centre
There are some interesting displays at the Snowy Region Visitor Centre including lots of photos and artefacts from the area’s pioneer days, all beautifully presented. Lots of local information, the town cinema and a great coffee shop are also in the building.
Sample a drop
Sample the schnapps and the good food at the Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery. You can sit indoors or outdoors depending on the weather. Walk around the well-maintained grounds to see the interesting outdoor sculptures. This place is also very popular, especially during the snow season.
If you’d rather feed the fish instead of catching them, head out to the Gaden Trout Hatchery set in beautiful surrounds beside the Thredbo River. It’s one of Australia’s main hatcheries of cold water sport fish to stock waterways in the higher areas of Australia. You can purchase wood-smoked trout there too.
We chilled out in Jindabyne in the spring, after the busy snow season. However anytime is a good time to chill out in Jindabyne.
